Rival Consoles shares a compelling new video for Hidden, taken from the acclaimed new album Persona out now. Directed by Dan Medhurst, the film flickers between the abstract and reality, light and dark, much like Ryan Lee West's music.
“This film was quite a journey to creation,” says director Dan Medhurst. “After shooting a live performance of Ryan, we fed those shots through a series of old BBC editing monitors and projectors. We filmed more layers and introduced textures and distortion with some fresnel lenses. This gave us a different dynamic and really added some warmth to the film. Through this process of sending the video from digital to analogue signal, and then back again, we created a rich blend of abstract visuals that changed and morphed into something entirely new by the end.”
Written after Ryan saw Slowdive perform live last year, Hidden builds from whispers to landscapes of controlled noise. “The track explores the tension between beauty and ugliness, soft and harsh, and the desire for energy to erupts and resolve. I’m often trying to explore the place where these polarities exist and work together,” explains Ryan.
Ryan begins his North American tour this week, before heading back to the UK for a string of dates in June including Gottwood Festival.
