Erased Tapes will celebrate the launch of its Solo Piano sheet music book on Piano Day, with a special open day at the Sound Gallery from midday to midnight on March 29th. The event is free and will feature intimate performances on the piano from Douglas Dare and Neil Cowley, masterclasses and workshops with Michael Price and Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM will broadcast live on the day and DJ sets from Lukid, Joe Armon-Jones and Kit Records.
Solo Piano is a collection of twenty newly-arranged scores published for the first time in a book and presented alongside bespoke programme notes from Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths. From Ólafur Arnalds’ 0040 through to recent songs from ambient music duo A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Solo Piano offers an engaging chronological survey of the label’s first ten years. We will have five very special copies of the book signed by Nils Frahm, especially for Piano Day, hidden in shops across London. More details on the treasure hunt will be revealed on the day.
Neil Cowley will be performing selected works from Solo Piano on Piano Day at the Sound Gallery, while Erased Tapes' own Douglas Dare will be playing some of his own works as well as brand new material. Michael Price will be hosting a masterclass on piano improvisation in association with NX Records, a collaboration between Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records and Goldsmiths University. Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe will be giving a fascinating talk around his recent work making music using the sounds picked up from the LIGO — Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory — that made the first-ever direct observation of gravitational waves, detecting ripples in the fabric of space and time predicted by Albert Einstein 100 years earlier.
You're welcome to drop by the Sound Gallery, play on our Una Corda and Rippen pianos and enjoy Piano Day.
